Bannu – May 21, 2025: Terrorists launched a deadly attack on a police checkpoint in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Bannu district late Wednesday night, killing two policemen and injuring another, law enforcement officials confirmed.

Terrorists Attack Checkpoint with Hand Grenades and Advanced Weapons

The militants carried out the Bannu attack at the New Sabzi Mandi police checkpoint, using hand grenades and advanced weaponry. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Inspector General of Police, Zulfiqar Hameed, stated that the terrorists caused minor damage before fleeing the scene. Thanks to the quick and effective response of the on-duty officers, the assailants failed to inflict greater harm.

Several attackers escaped after the assault, prompting law enforcement to immediately launch a search operation to track them down.

Regional Police Officer Sajjad Khan reported that police swiftly retaliated, killing and injuring several terrorists. He emphasized that the strong resistance by police forces prevented a potentially larger catastrophe. The attackers had apparently planned a major strike but were thwarted due to police vigilance and prompt action.

This violent incident is part of a growing wave of terrorist attacks in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan. Since the Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) ended its ceasefire with the government in November 2022, militants have increasingly targeted security personnel and law enforcement agencies.

Earlier this month, unidentified gunmen assassinated Police Constable Khanzeb near the Asghar fuel station in Bannu. In another incident in Swabi, suspected terrorists attacked the Utla police station, injuring three police officers before the police returned fire.

In 2024 alone, the military reported killing 925 militants, while 383 soldiers died in various clashes. The latest incident occurred in Bannu district when militants attacked a police post in Fateh Khel, a rundown area on Bannu’s outskirts, local police officer Nadir Khan said.

“Terrorists launched the midnight attack, killing two police officers, Rahimullah and Ziaullah, and injuring two others,” Khan told Arab News.

Security Forces on High Alert as Law enforcement agencies remain on high alert as terrorist activities surge across the province. Following the Bannu attack, security forces have intensified search operations to apprehend the fleeing attackers and ensure the safety of the region.
