Tokyo – 02 May 2025: Cristiano Ronaldo Al Nassr exited the AFC Champions League after a 3-2 semifinal defeat to Japan’s Kawasaki Frontale in Jeddah. The loss ended Al Nassr’s title hopes, despite Ronaldo’s influence and a squad worth millions.
Tatsuya Ito opened the scoring in the 10th minute at King Abdullah Sports City. The Japanese striker later helped set up Yuto Ozeki’s goal after Sadio Mane equalized for Al Nassr. Substitute Akihiro Ienaga sealed Kawasaki’s third, with Aiman Yahya’s late goal reducing the deficit but not altering the outcome.
The match drew global attention as Ronaldo, who earns over $200 million annually from Al Nassr including commercial deals, struggled to inspire a comeback. Despite his high-profile presence, Kawasaki controlled key moments of the match.
Ito described playing against Ronaldo Al Nassr and other stars as surreal. “It felt like a video game. But we focused and played as a unit,” he said. Kawasaki’s disciplined defense and efficient counterattacks proved decisive.
Al Nassr faced difficulties breaking down a well-organized Kawasaki side, which had already stunned Al Sadd in the quarterfinal. With this win, Kawasaki advanced to the final against Saudi Arabia’s Al Ahli, representing Japan and the J-League with pride.
Ronaldo posted a message of disappointment on social media, stating, “The dream has to wait,” while thanking fans for their support.
