Pakistan permits 150 Afghan trucks via Wagah border for India trade, showing support for regional cooperation and economic ties.

Lahore – 01 May 2025: Pakistan has permitted 150 Afghan trucks to cross the Wagah border into India for trade, reaffirming its commitment to regional cooperation. The Foreign Office spokesperson confirmed this move, citing strong bilateral ties with Afghanistan.

The trucks will carry commercial goods to India, facilitating much-needed trade for the landlocked country. The spokesperson emphasized that this gesture aligns with Pakistan’s consistent efforts to support Afghanistan’s economic stability through enhanced connectivity.

The decision comes amid limited regional trade options for Afghanistan. India has closed the Wagah-Attari route for Afghan trucks, which has created barriers to cross-border commerce. Despite this, Pakistan has demonstrated flexibility and goodwill to ensure trade continues.

While announcing the clearance of Afghan trucks via Wagah, Pakistan reiterated its long-standing policy of friendly ties with Afghanistan. The FO highlighted that the move supports humanitarian and economic needs, especially under the current regional challenges.

Observers note that this development reflects Pakistan’s broader diplomatic approach to support Afghanistan, even amid its own security concerns. Trade experts see this as a practical step that could pave the way for long-term regional trade normalization.

Pakistan’s facilitation comes at a time when tensions with India remain high, particularly after the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty and recent diplomatic strains. Still, Islamabad has opted for constructive engagement through economic cooperation with Kabul.

This move not only supports Afghanistan’s struggling economy but also emphasizes Pakistan’s role as a key trade corridor. By allowing Afghan trucks via Wagah, Pakistan has underscored its commitment to regional peace, trade facilitation, and good neighborly relations.
